This is the cake I baked for my Grandmother's seventieth birthday. It was a massive surprise for her as she'd told me earlier in the year that she'd never once had a birthday cake. This made me feel so horrid inside, knowing that nobody had taken the time when she was a child to give her that something special, although as I later found out, this was because she was from a very humble family who saved their money for more important and higher priority needs. Me and my family took my Grandmother out for a meal (I managed to sneak this cake in and get the kitchen staff to hide it for me), when everybody had finished their main courses and were sat contemplating dessert, I announced that I had to go to the bathroom. My whole family knew that this was a code for 'I'm going to get the cake, make it look like you're interested in the pudding menus'. Needless to say that when I came back from my 'toilet break', carrying this special love-filled cake, my Grandmothers eyes welled with tears, as did my own. There's simply nothing better than being able to make someone's special day even more special with a personalised gift.
This is a layered sponge, covered with royal icing and decorated using fondant icing.
I would charge roughly between £8-£10 for something like this.
